Staunton’s Wine Bar & Cafe is Soho’s Favourite Hangout Spot Since 1997

Soho has seen its fair share of rotating restaurants and bars over the years—a result of the difficulty in maintaining a consistent reputation amid discerning Hong Kong diners. Opening its doors in 1997, Staunton’s Wine Bar & Cafe is one of the most longstanding venues in the neighbourhood, serving guests for over 20 years. Cha Siu Papers Times’ contributor Aiden Bradley stops by to try the lunch dishes.

Soho location

You won’t miss the entrance of Staunton’s Wine Bar & Cafe—it’s located just off the escalators in bustling Soho. Guests are often seen sitting on the steps outside sipping a beer, or inside either the first or second floor where the crowd are often cheerful and friendly—as are the staff. There’s an al-fresco space on the upper floor.

We brought Fred (our pooch) with us to the dog-friendly restaurant. Staff were very welcoming and happy to cater for all of us with outdoor seating.

Lunch

There are many deals available at Staunton’s. There’s buy one get one free deals, happy hours, set lunches and free-flow brunches—all at reasonable prices. The restaurant is helmed by a Nepalese chef, who helps a lot with the fusion dishes.

First, we tried the Sizzling Garlic Chorizo Prawns as an appetiser. The garlic went really well with the tender prawns, arriving in a hot plate and served with bread for dipping into the delightful sauce.

The Chorizo Pizza was slightly oily but made a good staple dish and was perfect for sharing. Everything felt fresh and hefty, thus very good for its price.

Next, we had the Asian Chicken Burger, which was cooked to perfection and juicy throughout. Sometimes it can be difficult to get chicken burgers that aren’t dry so we were pleasantly surprised. The dish came with fries and a tangy hot and spicy sauce.

Drinking & dining destination

There’s good reason for Staunton’s Wine Bar & Cafe being around for as long as it has. The go-to restaurant and bar is popular amongst happy hour seekers and weekend brunches thanks to its lively atmosphere and cheery staff. Diners and drinkers can perch themselves on the stairs outside, the al-fresco space or inside at the bar or seating area depending on their preferences. Frequented by locals and tourists, this classic stop is a must for group gatherings and one-on-one date nights.
